Advance to Go!
Woohoo! My advance cheque arrived this week.
Unfortunately it’s not the one pictured, but something much more modest. But hey, it’s an advance and it’s one more step towards making this whole thing a reality.
I’m told that my book will be listed on the publisher’s website in the next couple of weeks too. Will link to it when I know.
I even have an ISBN number!
I can also reveal the provisional title:
Enterprise 2.0: Implementing Social Software Inside Your Company
I’d be interested to hear what you think. I’m conscious that Enterprise 2.0 was first used in an article for the MIT Sloan Management Review written by Andrew McAfee, but not sure if anyone has any ownership of it. The only thing have found so far is a reference to a US patent for the term, but that applies only to conferences and educational services.
I’d welcome your views. I’m not wedded to it and who knows, by the time the book is published we might be on Enterprise 3.0 anyway!
Updated 6 November 2006: In the comments, Connie explains that the US patent application has been refused on the grounds of being too similar to existing trademarks. The application now has six months to present his case.

Congratulations on receiving your advance!
I checked the USPTO records on the trademark application for Enterprise 2.0. On Nov. 2, 2006 a notice was mailed to the applicant stating the examining attorney’s initial refusal of the trademark on the grounds that it was too similar to an already registered trademark for Participate Enterprise 2.0, a software application. The applicant has six months to disprove the similarity or the application will be abandoned. You can follow the legal status of this trademark by going to http://www.uspto.gov; click on Trademark in the left-hand menu and do a basic new-user search on Enterprise 2.0.
